Land survey for the long-pending Perumbavoor bypass project has picked up momentum and more than 50 per cent of the work has now been completed.
Sources said around 25 hectares would be acquired for the 30-metre-wide bypass road, which would be nearly four kilometres linking Palkkattuthazham Junction on the west end of the Perumbavoor town with Maruthukavala Junction on Aluva-Munnar Road, crossing the Perumbavoor-Puthenkurisu Road and Major Centre Road.
Land will be acquired in the Perumbavoor, Rayamangalam, Vengola and Marampally villages, which fall under the Kunnathunad taluk. The land acquisition orders were issued in July 2011. According to the sources, about 80 per cent of the land needed for the bypass has no human inhabitation, no places of worship. Schools or other public institutions will not be affected by the project. Six major culverts and a few minor ones will be built to avoid water-logging on the reach.
Heavy traffic on the Aluva-Munnar road and the growth of Perumbavoor town had prompted the authorities to plan the construction of a bypass in early 2010.
The work, initiated by the Public Works Department, was later handed over to the Kerala State Construction Corporation.
Financial assistance for the project, which is estimated to cost Rs.10 crore, will come from the Kerala Road Fund Board.
