Union Minister State for Food and Consumer Affairs K.V. Thomas, has experienced a decline in his total assets over the past five years he held office.

Mr.Thomas, who on Monday filed his nomination to contest as the United Democratic Front candidate from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha seat, declared a total asset of 1.13 crore as against Rs.1.50 crore declared in 2009.

In the mandatory affidavit attached to the nomination papers, Mr. Thomas has declared that he has a bank deposit of Rs.24.76 lakh and possesses liquid cash worth Rs.25,000 in hand. Besides, he also owns a Honda City car valued around Rs.9 lakh, taking his total individual assets to 34.69 lakh.

The Union Minister also declared the assets of his spouse Sherly Thomas as amounting to Rs 83.83 lakh which also includes a bank deposit of Rs.18.40 lakh and a vehicle worth Rs.7. 27 lakh.

The minister’s wife also owns two properties worth Rs.51.30 lakh in Vennala and gold jewellery worth Rs.2.84 lakh.

While the first plot, measuring 1,328.63 sq.ft is valued at 18.30 lakh, the second property of 2,395.88 sq.ft is priced at Rs.33 lakh.

Mr.Thomas and his wife owe a liability of Rs.1.95 lakh and 2.82 lakh each under the car loan category while the duo have received Rs.50,000 each as the interest on their bank deposits.

While contesting in the Parliamentary elections last time, Mr.Thomas had declared a total asset of 1.50 crore and a liability of Rs. 18 lakh, going by the information available on the website of an NGO, which keeps tabs on Parliamentarians. At that time, his total individual assets were worth Rs.67.3 lakh while that of his wife Rs.36.3 lakh. The minister had also ownership in two properties worth Rs.8 kakh while his wife owned immovable assets worth Rs 38.38 lakh.
