Kudumbashree Constructions, the all-woman construction wing of Kudumbahsree Mission, has successfully completed the first phase construction of a tribal settlement in Edakkattuvayal bringing in its wake new projects.

The unit has already received the contract to construct houses under the Ashraya Project at Mookkannoor panchayat. Work has been initiated for three houses. The Scheduled Tribe Development Department had enlisted Kudumbashree Constructions four months ago to build 87 houses as part of its tribal settlement. In the first phase, nine houses were constructed, which will be handed over to the beneficiaries shortly.

“The second phase will witness the construction of the remaining 78 houses simultaneously. We plan to complete the construction within ten months,” said Tani Thomas, district coordinator, Kudumbashree Mission.

The house with built-up area of 325 sq.ft. comprises a hall, a bedroom, kitchen, work area, and a toilet. The Scheduled Tribe Development Department had allotted Rs. 2.50 lakh per house and cost above this was met through sponsorship.

The construction was led by a team of two engineers and eight supervisors who are part of the Kudumbashree Constructions unit. They had at their disposal the service of 30 trained masons. The members of the unit were given extensive training before they embarked on the project soon after the launch of the unit last year.

“Masons were trained for three months by Kottayam-based agency Archana Women’s Centre, while the engineers and supervisors were trained by experts from Kitco. The cost of training was met jointly by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd and the State government,” Ms. Thomas said.

Meanwhile, Kudumbashree Constructions is in the process of expanding its reach and scope by adding more skilled workers into its fold. Fifteen electricians and 20 plumbers are currently undergoing training in Aluva.
