The Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation Limited (KSWDC) is planning to install 15 ‘she-toilets’ in the city. The introduction of the project in the city comes after the positive feedback received for these toilets in Thiruvanthapuram. At least 20 units were installed in the capital in December 2012.
Equipped with automatic doors, the unit is environment-friendly and boasts a water recycling facility. They are also equipped with sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators.
One feature that young moms will love is the diaper-changing table that is part of the unit.
Each unit will cost around Rs. 5.37 lakh, said Asha. G., Manager (Project). If the location needs bore wells, then the cost will go up accordingly.
Tenders have already been floated for 25 units and procedures for spotting and acquiring locations will be completed after discussions with Kochi Corporation authorities, she said.
The support of the Kerala Water Authority for round-the-clock water availability will also be sought, she said. The units will also have back-up power source in case of a failure.
To use the toilet, the fee is Rs. 2 and Rs. 5 for a sanitary napkin. Incorporating GPRS technology, the operations of the units would be controlled and monitored from a remote location, she said.
The department plans to introduce the facility across the state in the coming months
