A wax statue of late V.R. Krishna Iyer, jurist and former judge of the Supreme Court, who passed away here on Thursday, would be unveiled in the city shortly, it was announced at a function organised here on Saturday to commemorate him.
The statue is expected to reach the city by December 13. Speakers at the function demanded speedy setting up of a full-fledged government medical college and a cancer centre in Kochi, since Krishna Iyer had held the two institutions close to his heart and striven with missionary zeal to realize them.
Literary critic M.K. Sanoo, who was a close friend of the jurist, read out a resolution drafted by those close to the centenarian.
A person with great intellect, he was unparalleled in his profession and fields of activity. He took a strong stand on a host of complex issues. People of Kochi bow in respect to the departed soul, it read.
Another close friend, Dr. C.K. Ramachandran, spoke of how Krishna Iyer was always happy and interacted with others in a warm and friendly manner.
Krishna Iyer’s pro-poor judgments in his position as judge of the Supreme Court had not been overruled during the past 40 years, said president of Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association S.P. Chaly.
Writer K.L. Mohana Varma remembered the jurist as a person who strove for change within the system despite the system having many constraints. Minister for Excise and Ports K Babu highlighted how the iconic jurist strove to mould consensus on various issues.
Krishna Iyer’s close family members too were present. Mayor Tony Chammany presided.
