City folks will soon get yet another walkway to stroll along and view the panoramic sights of Kochi’s backwaters.
Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar will inaugurate the beautification works of the road that connects the Goshree Bridge and the Mount Carmel church in Chathiath on October 4. The project will be implemented by the Forest Industries Travancore at a cost of around Rs.5 crore.
The 1.5-kilometre long stretch will be developed as five zones based on colours and flowers that will be used to identify each zone. Besides the joggers’ path, playing areas, food courts and seating facilities will also be set up along with a musical fountain and fishing deck.
As many as 16 flower species will be grown in the area, based on the colour theme of each of the zones. The fishing deck is designed to float on the water at a short distance from the path.
According to tourism officials, the concept is to have a dedicated pedestrian path where no motor cars will be allowed and that will give a complete green pollution-free environment. “The city has a tremendous potential for tourism that needs to be harnessed by providing state-of-the-art facilities to visitors. The new road will have a capacity to accommodate about 2,000 visitors at a given point of time,” they said.
