Idukki is comparatively young in the poll spectrum of the State. The Assembly constituencies in the district received a unique character with the 1977 elections held after the Emergency — Devikulam became a reserved constituency and four others came into being.
Idukki district formed on January 26, 1972, curving out of Ernakulam and Kottayam districts, had the largest constituency in the State — Udumbanchola — till the last delimitation. Before the district was formed, the constituency-wise areas that fell in the district were Thodupuzha, Karimannur, Devikulam (SC reserved), Udumbanchola, and Peerumade (SC reserved).
In the first State Ministry, for which elections were held from February 28 to March 11, 1957, there were 126 constituencies in the State, including 12 twin-member constituencies. Devikulam (twin-member constituency), Thodupuzha and Karikode were the constituencies came under the areas now under Idukki.
The records on the history of the electoral process of the district begin with the election to the Travancore-Kochi Assembly held in 1951 having Kumaramangalam, Thodupuzha and Devikulam and the number of constituencies increased to four in the 1954 Travancore-Kochi elections. The constituencies were Thodupuzha, Devikulam (twin-member), Kumaramangalam and Pallivasal. In the twin-member constituencies, two members — one each from reserved category and general category — were elected to the Assembly.
From 1977, the number and names of the constituencies — Thodupuzha, Devikulam, Udumbanchola, Idukki and Peerumade — in the district have remained unchanged.
The district has 8,13,382 voters — 4,07,799 males and 4,05,583 females. As per the final voters list published by the Election Commission, there are only 32 Non-Resident Kerala voters in the district.
