Based of reports received by the District Medical Officer, raids were conducted in 388 spots selling cool drinks served on the wayside, closing down all because of the low quality of the ice used. One ice factory functioning without licence in Varapetty was among the units closed down by the Health squads.
At all the spots where the health squads conducted checks unhygienic and low quality ice was found in sugarcane juice, watermelon juice, kuluki sarbat and lemon juice sold from temporary wayside units.
Stale lemon and poor quality water was found in all juices that were on sale. Many units closed shop to escape the raids.
Twenty squads including a district-level and 19 block level teams conducted raids led by District Medical Officer Haseena Mohammed, district health officer (rural) P. N. Sreenivasan and C. P. Krishnan, technical assistant grade II. Dr. Mohammed said that it was reported that people who had consumed wayside cool drinks were admitted with typhoid.
