HC moots ban on agitations around district courts too

July 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:59 am IST - KOCHI:

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday proposed to ban demonstrations and gathering of people on district court premises, other court centres, and roads surrounding these court buildings in the State.

Single judge courts

The Bench in its order said that it was inclined to extend its earlier ban order on the High Court premises and its nearby roads to the district court and other court premises, including single court stations and the roads circling them.

The court said that in some stations the courts were housed in buildings which had other offices, including the revenue offices. Therefore, a practical insulation of the judicial sectors had to be maintained in consonance with the terms of the order issued on July 25.

Police Chief’s take

The court asked the government pleader to get instructions and inform the court whether the State Police Chief could take a call on the issue. The court had on Monday banned demonstrations and assembly of people on the High Court premises and roads surrounding the building in the backdrop of the recent stand off between journalists and lawyers.

Temporary restrictions

Meanwhile, the High Court imposed temporary restriction on the entry of legal reporters to the chambers of private secretaries of the High Court judges and the steno pool which they visited for checking and verifying the judgements and orders. The High Court public relations office requested reporters over phone to avoid visiting the chambers and steno pools in the High Court for a few days.
