The State Fisheries Department has earmarked Rs. 60 lakh for opening three modern fish malls, one each in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Minister for Fisheries K. Babu said here on Sunday that work on the fish malls would begin as soon as land was made available by the respective municipal corporations. The Minister was speaking after the inauguration of a modern fish market at Thevara.

The fish market was built at a total cost of Rs. 1.5 crore, with Rs. 1.21 crore coming from the National Fisheries Development Board. The State government contributed Rs. 28.5 crore.

The fish market is spread over an area of 506 square metres in two storeys comprising an auction hall and 12 display slabs on the ground floor. The first floor has 15 fish stalls as well as toilets. A Fisheries Department official said an effluent treatment plant would also be established with funds provided by Hibi Eden from the MLA fund.
