Gold seized at Kochi airport, two arrested

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials on Saturday arrested a person who landed at the international airport here in the morning and seized over two kilograms of gold from his possession.

The arrested was identified as Muhammad Niyas, 27, a native of Kasaragod. Acting on a tip-off, the sleuths intercepted him at the airport and during an examination, recovered the contraband concealed in his handbag.

Meanwhile, the sleuths have also apprehended an employee of a ground handling agency operating at the airport here. The arrested was identified as Anwar Aboobackar, who was working as a customer agent for a private airline. Official sources said he landed in custody while waiting at the aerobrige to receive the gold from Niyas. During a follow-up search, they recovered ₹6 lakh from his residence.
