The District General Hospital is functioning without a cold storage facility in the mortuary.

For the last two weeks, the hospital had been relying on the two mobile freezers lent by the Dhanwantri Society. In case there is requirement for more cold storage facility, people are directed to use the mortuary facilities at taluk hospitals.

The faulty cold room is beyond repair, said the hospital superintendent Dr. P. G. Anne. It was repaired five years ago but due to frequent faults in recent times, the hospital has to get a new one, she added. It is estimated to cost between Rs. 2 lakhs and 3 lakhs.

The Hospital Development Society (HDS) has decided to call for tenders to install a new cold storage. This decision was taken in a recent meeting chaired by District Collector M. G. Rajamanickam, who is also chairman of the HDS.

The whole process of getting a new cold storage is likely to take a month, Dr. Anne added.
