The Elamkulam bridge on Sahodaran Ayappan Road poses a big threat to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, as the approach road has sunk, creating a big gap between the road and the span.
Motorists are seen halting their vehicles and then negotiating the stretch, which has cropped up on the east end of the bridge and on the west side of the four-lane road. The road is maintained by the Corporation of Cochin.
While two-wheeler riders are exposed to great danger, other vehicles face the threat of damage. The local unit of the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement has put up a board near the bridge demanding immediate intervention to rectify the defect as a motorist has already lost his life because of the depression on the road.
A corporation engineer said that the problem had been referred to the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme, which will oversee the rectification.
The bridge had developed the same problem with the approach road dipping nearly a year ago and the problem was addressed. However, the new development is at least six months old and the gap between the road and the concrete bridge span has been increasing over these months.
Councillor of the Corporation of Cochin from Elamkulam Sojan Antony said that the condition of the bridge had been brought to his notice and that the matter would be taken up with the Corporation Council.
