Officials from the Marine Enforcement Wing of the Fisheries Department seized a fishing boat and nets on Wednesday for destructive fishing activities in the backwaters off Nayarambalam on Wednesday in a continuing crackdown on fishing practices that threaten to wipe out juvenile fishes.

A senior official of the Fisheries Department at the Vypeen Fisheries Station said that officials from the Marine Enforcement Wing had been on the lookout for fishing gears that had raised complaints from the area.

The fishing net that was seized on Wednesday was of small mesh size, less than 20 mm.

The gear is called adakkamkolli in Malayalam, which roughly translates into “kill all”.
