As many as 8,540 cyclone-hit fishing families of Chellanam and Vypeen will together receive an urgent solatium of ₹1.7 crore. Each family will get a sum of ₹2,000 based on a list prepared by the Fisheries Department.

The money has already been handed over to the department, the State Disaster Management Authority informed.

With the safe return of 290 fishermen on Friday, the number of fishers who returned safe post-cyclone stood at 1,671 people. A total of 26 boats too returned to Kochi on Friday.

So far, 157 boats have returned, while 33 are still expected.

Cleaning activities were taken up by officials of the Health and Revenue departments along with volunteers in Vypeen and Chellanam areas where houses and toilets had suffered severe damage.

The work is expected to be completed on Sunday. District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla has given instructions to urgently clean up the remaining houses flooded by seawater.

Sanitisation

Meanwhile, Health Department officials visited 244 households in Vypeen area on Friday.

The team sanitised 12 wells and sprayed bleaching powder at public spots. Twenty septic tanks were cleaned by a team of 58 officials led by the Community Health Centre, Malipuram.

A group of 66 officials visited 366 households in Chellanam area. Incidentally, 61 houses were found damaged.

The officials distributed ORS packets at 222 places and cleaned 10 septic tanks. As many as 142 septic tanks were damaged in the flooding.
