A pipe burst at Kochi Metro work site in Kaloor flooded the worksite and adjoining road on Monday.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) sources said that around 5 p.m. the excavator deployed to ferret out pipelines beneath the metro alignment tore through a 600 mm pipeline that is linked to the main distribution line coming from Aluva water treatment plant. Huge quantity of water streamed on to the road.
A senior Kerala Water Authority official said the valve to stop water in the line lay near Kathrikadavu, but before closing the valve the pressure of the water had to be brought down to avoid stepping up pressure in other pipes, said the official.
A water authority official told The Hindu that DMRC had replaced a water pipeline in the area when it was ruptured in a similar accident a few months ago
DMRC sources said: “KWA does not have sketches of precise location of its pipelines and we have no option but to trace and relocate them. Metro authorities cannot be held liable for omissions by KWA.”
