‘Declare Ernakulam drought-hit’

March 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

A meeting of the District Development Committee (DDC) held at the Ernakulam District Collectorate here on Saturday urged the State government to declare the district as drought-hit as many areas were facing acute drinking water shortage and allocate adequate funds for distributing water using tanker lorries.

A resolution in this regard was moved by Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath and backed by T.U. Kuruvila, Kothamangalam MLA.

According to Mr. Sadath, the situation in Ernakulam is worse than other districts. Groundwater levels are dropping fast and the water flow in rivers and canals have almost stopped. There are areas that have not got water supply for over a week.
