Cusat to step up vigil at hostels

The Cochin University of Science and Technology will step up surveillance at its hostels to check untoward incidents involving the inmates.

Surprise checks will be conducted to ensure discipline besides appointing assistant wardens in each hostel on the campus. A grievance redressal committee will be formed to address the issues being faced by the inmates.

The move is a follow-up on the recommendations made by a committee that probed the violence on the campus after an agitation by the Students Federation of India demanding better hostel facilities turned violent in July.

The agitators had then locked up Registrar S. David Peter and warden Job Thomas demanding permanent hostel allotment for nine B. Tech girl students. The police had to forcibly open the door and disperse the students, who had alleged that the varsity backtracked on its assurance of providing permanent allotment to the students.

The varsity Syndicate had recommended the expulsion of seven students from the hostel for their involvement in the incident. They have to pay a penalty of Rs.2,000 each to compensate the destruction of varsity property. The authorities have also decided to expel nearly 30 students, if they fail to tender an apology for participating in the agitation.
