Curbs on smartphone use at Cusat

December 09, 2017 01:49 am | Updated 01:49 am IST - KOCHI

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has issued orders restricting the use of smartphones, which could be used for recording audio or video, by students on the campus.

The order issued by the Joint Registrar, Academics, however, refers to the restriction being on the use of “audio-video recording machines” and not mobile phones per se. Nevertheless, the order is perceived to be against the use of smartphones. The SFI is planning a protest on Monday against the order. The move comes nearly a month after Cusat suspended three faculty members for “mentally harassing” a student. The latter, using her mobile phone, had recorded a video of her professors allegedly hurling abuse at her.

The head of the Marine Geology department had requested imposition of restrictions on the use of audio-video recording devices by students. The Vice-Chancellor, considering the request, ordered restriction on such devices.
