CSL keen on setting up shipyard in Gujarat

: Cochin Shipyard Limited is keen on entering business of setting up shipyard outside the State. The public sector ship-building and ship-repair unit is exploring avenues for establishing a shipyard at Kandla in Gujarat.

CSL has invited expression of interest (EOI) from global entities to conduct techno-economic feasibility study for developing a shipyard at Tuna, Kandla Port in Gujarat.

The company is in the process of checking the technical feasibility and economic viability of setting up a shipyard at the 310 hectares of land available at the inter-tidal region of Tuna.

It is proposed to construct dry docks and allied facilities to cater to the building and repair demands of vessels up to Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) size. Setting up of ancillary industries in connection with ship building or repair, ship breaking facility, possibility of accommodating Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC) are to be explored, according to the EOI document.

The company intends to appoint a project consultant to conduct Techno-Economic Feasibility Study (TEFS), it said. The consultant will study the soil conditions and other required investigations to establish the suitability of setting up the project.

The consultant is also expected to prepare a preliminary analysis regarding the market potential of ship building and repair industry in the west coast. Coastal Regulation Zone and environmental clearance and other statutory clearances required for the project will have to be identified and listed as the proposed area has mangrove cover in the vicinity.
