A district-level action plan for checking the spread of contagious diseases will be prepared before May 14.
The District Medical Officer will prepare an action plan for the district. The government had earlier allotted Rs. 1.74 crore for checking the spread of diseases in the district, said K. Babu, Minister for Excise.
A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of State Ministers, health officials and district authorities here on Monday.
The funds for the programme would be made available from the National Rural Health Mission.
Each division of the civic bodies in the district can spend up to Rs. 25,000 for cleanliness and disease prevention measures and any amount required in excess would be sanctioned by the District Collector, it was decided at the meeting.
A State-level pre-monsoon cleanliness campaign will be kicked off on May 17.
The medical officers of each hospital in the district will function as the coordinator for the drive and the service of the Rapid Response Teams will also be made available.
Control rooms will function round the clock and ambulance facilities will also be made available.
Hospitals will have sufficient stock of medicines and equipment to meet any eventuality, it was decided.
The leaky water supply pipelines in West Kochi region will be replaced shortly. Administrative sanction for replacing the pipelines was also issued on Monday and the Rs. 3crore-project will be implemented within four months, said Tony Chammany, Kochi Mayor, who attended the deliberations.
The estimate for the project was prepared some four months ago.
Though it may not be possible to replace all the pipelines before the onset of monsoon, the leaky pipelines would eventually go. Health experts have identified the leaky pipelines as carriers of polluted water as a large number of them were laid through drains and canals, Mr. Chammany said.
