Corporation to help in waste disposal

August 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:19 am IST - Kochi:

The Kochi Corporation has offered to help residents hosting get-togethers dispose of refuse including food waste.

“Do not dump refuse on streets. We shall pick them from homes at a nominal fee. If caught dumping waste, you will end up paying fine,” cautioned V.K. Minimol, Chairperson of the Health Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation.

Recently, the civic administration had imposed a fine of Rs.7,000 each on some individuals for illegally dumping food waste.

“Alert the civic administration, and we will make arrangements for collection and transportation of refuse from venues at a fee as low as Rs.1,000. If caught littering or dumping refuse on roads, the fine will be Rs.5,000 and above,” she said.

The local body has decided to strictly implement rules governing the management of refuse and the penal provisions pertaining to dumping of waste. Law will be enforced and fines slapped to discourage the tendency, she added.
