The district administration has stayed the construction of a compound wall on wetlands on the side of the Vallarpadam-Kalamassery National Highway.
There had been reports of large-scale filling up of wetlands in the area. A. Ramachandran, member of the Kerala State Coastal Zone Management Authority, had approached the district administration and the authority against the reclamation.
He had complained that the reclamation destroyed the inter-tidal flats and mangroves in the area.
Compound walls were constructed affecting the ecologically sensitive areas of the district, he had said. Ernakulam District Collector P. I. Sheikh Pareeth said he issued a stay order on Sunday on the construction of the wall at the southern end of Mulavukad island by a private party after it was found to be a serious case of encroachment.
