A meeting of the district development committee (DDC) held here on Saturday asked the PWD to repair the Kumbalanghi-Ezhupunna Road, which is in a dilapidated condition.

The meeting observed that the poor state of the 5.86-km long road has made life in the area miserable. The issue was raised by Dominic Presentation, MLA, and M.P. Sivadattan, representative of the Union Minister for State for Food K.V. Thomas.

Mr. Presentation said that maintenance works of coastal roads should not be delayed. Construction of the Chellanam-Pandikkudy Road should be started immediately. Kerala Water Authority was asked to address the issues in connection with the supply of drinking water in West Kochi regions.

Tender procedures and related activities for replacing pipelines in the Karuvellippady region have been delayed despite providing Rs. 3 crore for the project.

Hibi Eden, MLA, said that Akshaya centres were not functioning properly.

He called for addressing the issue by setting up help desks at taluk and panchayat levels.

Mr. Eden said that MLAs should be included in the monitoring committees of Akshaya centres.

Benny Behanan, MLA, said that drinking water shortage is acute in many parts of the district owing to deficient rainfall.

The problem should be resolved by re-arranging the pipeline network and laying new pipelines, he said.

Financial aid can be made available from the MP and MLA funds for drinking water supply projects.

Jose Thettayil, MLA, said that officials staying away from DDC meetings without prior permission should be taken to task.

Mr. Presentation complained of diversion of boats operating in the Ernakulam-Fort Kochi route to other areas.

District transport officer said that the arrival of 100 KSRTC buses allotted to the district will ease the woes of the travelling public.

The meeting called for removing people’s apprehensions about the High Speed Rail Corridor project and said that land should not be frozen indefinitely for the project.
