Getting a seat for a B. Com or B.Sc. Chemistry course in a college affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University in the new academic year could be an uphill task going by the rush for these programmes in 2012-13.
According to the data available with the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) cell of the university, the maximum number of options – 2.59 lakh – was submitted for the B. Com. Model 1 course by over 25, 540 students. While applying, a student can opt for any number of colleges affiliated to the university.
The maximum number of options for an undergraduate programme in science was registered for B.Sc. Chemistry Model 1 programme — 1.13 lakh. Over 15,800 students had exercised their options for this course.
B.Sc. Chemistry course also emerged the second in the most sought after courses being offered by the university as per the CAP regular allotment figures for undergraduate programmes in 2012-13.
There was good demand for B.A. Economics course, which emerged third going by the number of options submitted by the candidates. About 1.09 lakh options were submitted for this course by about 17,290 students.
While more than 95,309 options were submitted for B.Sc. Physics, the B.A. English Language and Literature programme saw 85,206 options.
As per preliminary estimates, the cut-offs for B.Com course would go up by at least two per cent this academic year.
The highest index mark for B.Com. Model 1 for seats under the general category was 956 in 2012-13 while the minimum index mark was 508.
For the B.Sc. Chemistry programme, the highest index mark was 1,015 while the minimum mark was 707. The maximum index mark for B.A. Economics Model 1 was 1,465 and the minimum marks 946.
For B. Com. (Model I), the highest rank index among candidates in city colleges was 96.8 per cent in the general category in 2011-12. It was 98.9 per cent in colleges across second towns in Ernakulam district.
In English, the highest rank index in 2011-12 among city colleges was 95.4 per cent. In second towns of the district, the highest rank index was 96.3 per cent.
