August 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:32 am IST - KOCHI:

Bamboo Innovation Centre, a hub for providing impetus to the bamboo sector, will be inaugurated on the premises of the Kerala State Bamboo Corporation, Angamaly, on Tuesday by Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan.

The centre will help introduce the bamboo industry in the State to the latest developments in the global bamboo sector and open the doors of opportunity to artisans in the State. The centre has also the backing of the State Bamboo Mission. Training for the first batch of artisans will be inaugurated on Tuesday.

India is rich in bamboo resources. It is estimated that India has around 13.96 million hectares under bamboo and most of it is in the north-eastern region. Though the richness and diversity are impressive, the bamboo resources are not unutilised fully. Kerala has around 24 varieties of bamboo at its disposal. Bamboo provides 35 to 45 per cent more oxygen than other plants and is environment friendly.
