Auteur John Abraham’s cult film, ‘Amma Ariyan’ was screened at a packed hall in the city on Sunday as part of a solidarity meet organised by cultural activists to register their protest against the ‘saffronisation’ of culture arguably happening in India.

The digitised version of the 1986-film revolves around the death of a revolutionary following police brutality and raises uncomfortable questions about revolution, its need and failure.

A discussion that preceded the screening had P. Rajeeve, CPI (M) district secretary and former MP, speak about the need to resist using parliamentary democracy fascist occurrences sporadically rearing their ugly heads in the country.

The event was organised by Amma Ariyan Collective coordinated by E.P. Joseph to protest against top appointments done by the Centre at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.
