Aquaculture practices should follow eco-friendly methods in order to achieve sustainable development in the fisheries sector, Fisheries Minister K. Babu said on Friday.
The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of the Professor Alikunhi Chair for Sustainable Aquaculture systems at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, here on Friday. Depletion of indigenous fish stock was a serious threat to the fish biodiversity of the State and proper awareness programmes for farmers should be organised in this regard.
Appropriate farming technologies should be developed under the new Chair to meet the challenges faced by the sector, the Minister added. Vice Chancellor of KUFOS B. Madhusoodana Kurup, who presided over the function, said that the newly constituted Chair would focus on implementation of novel energy efficient culture strategies, effective nutrient budgeting approaches and eco-friendly waste minimisation and management strategies in farming system, said a press release.
