Kochi: Jenisha, who underwent the first heart and lung transplant in the State, was discharged from hospital a month after the surgery.

The 26-year-old had a twin transplant on January 6. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Jose Chacko Periapuram at Lisie Hospital. The organs were donated by the family of 19-year-old Nithin from Karunagappally, who was declared brain dead following a road accident.

For the time being, Jenisha will be shifting to a temporary home near the hospital. She will be staying there for three months for review. Daughter of Nirmala and Varghese of Kuttampuzha, Jenisha had been suffering from a rare congenital disease called Isonmengor. It was diagnosed during examinations after she was hospitalised for respiratory problems. The disease had affected the lungs too.

As organ transplant was the only way to save Jenisha’s life, she was registered under the State’s ‘Mrithasanjeevani’ programme.

Within four hours of the surgery, the transplanted organs began functioning. In three days, she started breathing on her own.

Hospital director Fr. Thomas Vaikathuparambil, Dr. Rony Mathew, Dr. Bhaskar Ranganathan, Dr. Thomas Mathew, Dr. Jo Joseph, and Dr. A.R. Paramesh were present at a function in which the patient was discharged.
