414 sensitive booths in district

October 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - KOCHI:

The district has 414 sensitive polling booths.

Most of these booths fall within the municipal and corporation limits and the eastern suburbs of the district.

Out of these booths, 131 have been identified within the city police limits while the remaining 283 are within the rural police limits.

Double the force compared to normal polling booths would be deployed in these booths. Besides, separate vehicles would also be deployed for special police officers at these booths. Extra alert would be declared in the areas around the sensitive booths.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has gone on an overdrive in its efforts to ensure the smooth conduct of the local body elections.

Coordinating election preparedness using technology is the stated objective of NIC. In the initial stage, the NIC is engaged in creating a list of employees for election duty.

More than 23,000 employees from various departments have been registered for the election duty.

Details of each employee complete with their physical or practical difficulties would be shown against their names.

The list will be submitted for finalisation after considering those eligible for exemptions as per guidelines laid down by the Election Commission.

Unlike the centralised system in the previous years, institutions under the local bodies have been entrusted with the duty of registration in an effort to make the election process more transparent.

NIC extends the technical support to these institutions. It is the responsibility of the NIC to vet the list and hand it over to the election wing.

Restrictions on rallies

Election Commission has banned meetings and rallies between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Even for organising them outside that window, written permission should be procured from the police officials concerned.

Besides, court directions in this regard should also be observed.
