12-year jail for fake currency accused

The Ernakulam Additional Sessions Court on Wednesday awarded 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 2 lakh fine on the accused in a counterfeit currency case.

Additional Sessions Court Judge R. Raghu sentenced Shajahan, a native of Kollam, who had landed in police custody while attempting to do a transaction using counterfeit currency at a provision shop at Statue Junction, Thripunithura, on August 23, 2007.

The accused was handed over to the police by the shop owner who had a suspicion about the genuineness of the currency handed over by Shajahan.

Two more accused

Though there were two more accused in the case, the second accused died before the trial. The prosecution could not prove charges levelled against the third accused.
