In yet another tragic story of a migrant worker, 38-year-old Dakam Mallaiah of Sadasivanagar in Kamareddy district had gone to Dubai in search of employment in 2008. About three years later, he went missing and has not been traced yet.
His mother Ilaimma, wife Sayavva and children Navitha and Rajender have been facing problems ever since.
His mother’s health is deteriorating. Nobody knows as to what happened to Mr. Mallaiah and his whereabouts remain unknown.
Hailing from the Kuruma caste, Mallaiah had left to the Gulf by spending more than ₹1.5 lakh. He had borrowed the money from a local lender at high rate of interest. However, he managed to repay the debt.
As the family and their relatives are illiterate, they do not know whom to approach to learn what might have happened to Mr. Mallaiah. Rajender, his son studying in Class IX, hardly remembers his father.
“For about two years, he kept in touch through phone. We just want him to come back home. He is my only son. We married off his daughter in his absence as she attained marital age,” says Ilamma, mother of Mr. Mallaiah.
Gulf Telangana Welfare and Cultural Association representative Patkuri Basanth Reddy said Mr. Mallaiah may either be in jail or his body may be in freezer. “If he was not carrying proper documents or a legally valid employment visa, he might have been jailed. Unknown dead bodies are kept intact in freezers. We are trying to trace him with the help of Minister K.T. Rama Rao and Indian Embassy,” he said.
