Catholics, though a small community in India, contributed a lot to the development of India, and many veterans like L.K. Advani, Jyoti Basu and others are the products of Christian educational institutions, said former Lok Sabha Speaker and MP P.A. Sangma.
Addressing people at the celebrations of 300 years of the Catholic faith here on Sunday, Mr. Sangma stated that he would revive the Christian MPs Forum in Parliament and work towards solving the problems of the community. He was accompanied by his daughter, former Union Minister Agatha Sangma. Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya also graced the occasion.
Mr. Dattatreya said that services provided by Christian missionaries, educational and health institutions were laudable, and he promised to protect all rights due to them as per the Constitution. He mentioned that his Ministry was planning to set up a National Workers’ Vocational University, which would provide skill training from Level 1 to 10.
The Minister also said that he would look into the matter of declaring Loyola Academy a Christian Minority University. MP A.P. Jitender Reddy, former nominated MLA Christine Lazarus and others were present.
