Some sympathisers have created a page ‘Save Shaikh Mohammed Iqbal IPS’ on social networking site Facebook a week ago

Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Board Special Officer Shaikh Mohammed Iqbal, who is at the centre of the stand off between the Wakf Board and the caretakers of many Dargahs and Wakf institutions over his tough tactics, is finding support in the social media world.

Due to the crackdown against the caretakers and tenants of various Wakf properties in the city and outskirts, Mr. Iqbal is garnering support from the masses, albeit on the social media.

Apart from forming groups and debating ways to save Wakf properties, which are actually meant to benefit the community, some individuals are also updating the details of the standoff between a section of religious scholars and the IPS official.

Caretakers action condemned

Many are not hesitant to condemn the action of the caretakers of Wakf institutions for alleged ‘mismanagement of funds and properties’ for decades at a stretch and shower praises on the official for his tough stand.

A few sympathisers have started a campaign in support of him. As part of it they have created a page ‘Save Shaikh Mohammed Iqbal IPS’ on social networking site Facebook a week ago after a group of religious leaders petitioned the Chief Secretary alleging that his actions were biased.

Already the page has gained 700 followers and the numbers are increasing.

People irrespective of the caste and school of thought are posting their complaints and grievances about the state of affairs at various Wakf institutions on the page to draw the attention of the authorities.

Online campaign

The online campaign has only intensified after the recent confrontation between caretaker of Dargah Shah Khamoosh, Akbar Nizamuddin Hussaini and Mr. Iqbal. The former is accused of mismanaging and selling 865 acres of property belonging to the Dargah which he denies.
