Not just the law enforcement agencies, but even the city’s civic body will have ‘informers’ now. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has come up with a unique plan to improve and maintain the condition of the roads. For every 100 metre stretch, a person will be appointed by the Corporation to pass on information to the officials about potholes or damages to the road.
In Greater Hyderabad, the road network spans over 9000 km out of which 3000 km length of road is under repair due to works taken up by Hyderabad Water Board and private telecom operators.
Immediate response
The volunteers who will be appointed by the GHMC will coordinate with deputy commissioners and engineering officials if they spot any damage, said GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy. He said that the officials will be instructed to take up the repair works on a war-footing whenever they are alerted.
Talking about the condition of the roads where Hyderabad Metro Rail project is in progress, he said that efforts are on to improve the quality of the roads by the GHMC. The Commissioner also said that permission for digging of roads are given only after the tendering process for laying and levelling of the stretch is completed.
Monsoon plan
As part of the Monsoon Action Plan, the Corporation has taken up 300 works with an outlay of ₹27.84 crore. It is proposed to have 48 teams for filling potholes and 121 monsoon teams once the new season arrives. The GHMC has also identified 234 water stagnation points, out of which 27 are critical and 74 are major water logging points. The officials are working towards removing these points.
Regarding the encroachments on storm water drains, the GHMC has written to the state government to release ₹230 crore for the removal of 12,000 illegal structures and widen the drains before the monsoon.
