Barely a day after a few student of the University of Hyderabad stepped up their agitation with a relay hunger strike, the authorities have appealed to them to withdraw protests, stating that a retired High Court judge is looking into the contentious issue of Vice-President elections on campus.

The University, in a statement, said that the matter has been referred to the retired judge after students striking under the aegis of Tribal Students’ Forum refused to heed to the officials’ advice on withdrawing the agitation.

Relay hunger strike

Four students went on a relay hunger strike on Tuesday, with a few others joining them the next day.

They are opposing the University’s decision to put on hold the election to the post of vice-president over allegations that the winning candidate, Naresh Lunavath, had less than 75% attendance as required by norms. The Students’ Union elections for 2017-18 was held on September 21.

University efforts

The varsity officials said the Registrar and Security Officer on Wednesday made an effort to persuade the agitating students to allow the University to conduct a proper exercise to resolve the matter and advised them to wait for suggestions of the retired judge.
