TS TDP leaders petition Pranab Mukherjee

March 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated April 02, 2016 11:48 am IST - HYDERABAD:

A delegation of Telangana Telugu Desam party leaders, including party floor leader in Rajya Sabha, T. Devender Goud, met President Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi on Tuesday and urged him to initiate appropriate action to uphold principles of democracy and restore rule of law in Telangana.

The delegation, which included floor leader in Assembly, E. Dayakar Rao, submitted a representation to the President, alleging that there is misuse of constitutional machinery in Telangana and sought his intervention.

The petition mentioned that of the 15 TDP MLAs elected in Telangana, three had switched loyalties to Telangana Rashtra Samithi during November, 2014 in violation of provisions of the 10{+t}{+h}Schedule of the Constitution.

It said one of them has been elevated as Cabinet Minister and others have been allotted seats in the treasury benches in brazen manner in blatant violation of the anti-defection law.

It also alleged that TRS has engineered en masse defections in the Legislative Council from TDP to TRS. It accused the State government of curbing press freedom high-handedly and preventing holding of press meets by legislators in the premises of the Assembly. All democratic institutions in the State have been tinkered with by the ruling TRS.

A similar representation was also submitted to the Election Commission.
