MCK to distribute two cloth bags to discourage plastic bags

The Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar, which was included in the Smart City programme, and has secured 73rd rank in All-India Swach Sarvekshan, has announced a blanket ban on use of plastic bags of below 50 microns from Monday in entire Karimnagar town.

The civic body plans to impose fines ranging from ₹ 2,000 to ₹20,000 on any person, shops, traders, hoteliers and others who use the banned plastic bags.

It has decided to distribute two cloth bags to each household in the town to discourage use of plastic carry bags, Mayor S. Ravinder Singh told newsmen here on Saturday.

The Mayor said that they had served notices to all the shops, business establishments, fruits and vegetable vendors, tiffin centres, hotels, curry points, mutton and chicken centres and others to avoid usage of banned plastic bags and warned them of imposing heavy fines. He also said that they would be launching a campaign in entire town educating the people to discourage the use of plastic bags and containers which were causing health problems and also serious damage to the environment.

Surprise inspections

Close on the heels of distribution of two dust bins for the segregation of wet and dry garbage at the generating points in the houses, the MCK had also decided to distribute two cloth bags to each household to encourage people to use only eco-friendly bags and discourage use of plastics.

He said that the Municipal officials would conduct surprise inspections of the shops and establishments to ensure that there was complete ban of plastics in Karimnagar town.

Swach Sarvekshan

The MCK which scored 201 rank in Swach Sarvekshan survey during the year 2017 had improved its performance and secured all India 73rd rank in the year 2018. The Union Ministry of Urban Affairs had announced the survey results on Saturday. Thanking the people for ensuring proper sanitation in the town, the Mayor hoped that the Karimnagar town would further improve its ranking in the year 2019 by ensuring proper sanitation with the cooperation of the residents.
