Burglars made off with a safe locker containing Rs. 2 lakh and gold ornaments worth nearly Rs. 15 lakh after breaking into a flat at Begumpet on Tuesday.

The owner of the flat, G. Tata Krishna, an electrical contractor, had gone to Vijayawada on some work. A neighbour at Shyam Lal Royal apartments rang up Mr. Krishna in the morning after finding the latter’s lock broken.

“The building has a watchman and a security guard. Somehow, the offenders managed to hoodwink them and broke into the flat,” Begumpet Additional Inspector Balu Chowhan said. The burglars unscrewed the safe locker, which weighed nearly 20 kilos and was affixed to the wall, and decamped with it. The building had no surveillance cameras.
