When Swamy Ra Ra hit the screens in March 2013 and went on to become a runaway success, ‘Colours’ Swathi (she’s still referred to that way) and Nikhil were touted a very successful pair.
They are back together to entertain audiences with debutant Chandoo Mondeti’s Karthikeya , which also has some good work by young Karthik Gattamaneni behind the camera. Now while the film is being publicised as a thriller – with a bit of the unexpected – both director and director of photography (DoP) swear it would a family-entertainer.
Even while being categorised thus, there are quite a few things that the director has experimented with, especially by way of giving the DoP complete freedom. So you find about 200 to 250 shots done on CG (Computer Graphics), apart from technically not-so-common practices.
“I tried to maintain good, traditional compositions of the frames while delivering what I believe is simple cinematography pleasing to the eye,” Karthik says.
Interestingly, throughout the film, the DoP has not used a thermocol reflector – not even for a single scene.
“This is because I wanted to use the shadows beneath the eye of the subject to suggest an element of mystery, and raise questions in the minds of the viewers,” he explains.
Ask Chandoo to describe his film in one line and this is what he has to say, “Do not dwell too much into things that are beyond normal comprehension. But at the same time, keep your mind open and try to distinguish, draw the line between what is generally accepted considered right or wrong.”
