Thirty-year-old Swarnalatha will never forget May 19. For on this day, the MBA graduate got a new lease of life. The woman attempted to end her life by jumping into the Hussainsagar Lake after slipping into depression over some family issues.
But, thanks to the vigilant Lake police personnel, a couple of constables jumped into the lake and rescued her. Eight months later, now Swarnalatha is advising citizens against taking such drastic decisions. “I am lucky that I was saved. You might not be so and your family will suffer after your death. One must be bold and fight out the problems rather than taking hasty decisions,” the woman advised.
Narrating her tale, Swarnalatha told she developed some differences with her parents after they pressurised her to marry. “I wanted to do something big in my life. But my parents did not encourage me. Things have however, changed now. The police have counselled them and also me about importance of life and living,” the woman reveals.
About 25 persons from different segments of the society converged at a programme organised by the Central zone police to send across a message to the public against committing suicides. Many of them were rescued by the Lake Police in last one year and all of them repented their act.
“I was facing financial problems after closing down my pan shop. I took to driving an auto rickshaw, but it did not help. Tension in family life also started so I decided to end my life and tried to jump into the lake when the policemen caught me,” says Mohd. Kaleem, an autorickshaw driver from Musheerabad.
Now Kaleem is a happy man and loves being with his one-and-a-half year old daughter. “The police called in my in-laws, wife and counselled them. I have vowed never to repeat ‘idiotic’ acts again,” he laughs off.
The survivors were taken in a boat around the Hussainnagar Lake.
DCP (Central) V.B. Kamalahasan Reddy said that every few days the Lake Police prevent people from committing suicides. They have financial problems, family issues or are unemployed we counsel them and hand them over to their relatives.
