The Hyderabad traffic police have succeeded in controlling road accidents for four consecutive years. Since 2010, the number of accidents has declined, though marginally.
While 1,951 accidents were reported till September, 2012, the figure stood at 1,804 this year during the corresponding period.
Even fatalities were controlled. Except in 2012, road accident deaths were brought down from 2010 to this year. The figures for injured persons, too, witnessed a decline. While 2,006 persons sustained wounds in road accidents in 2010, the figure came down by 285 this year.

Pedestrians and two-wheeler riders together constitute the maximum number of victims. “If we focus on the safety of pedestrians and can rein in rash driving by two-wheeler riders, fatalities can be brought down further sharply,” admits an Inspector. Some vehicle drivers, however, have a different view. “If the traffic police accord high priority to curbing accidents instead of taking pains to slap fines for violation of rules like wrong parking, better results can be achieved,” they observe.
