Students unfazed by the number of participants taking part in The Hindu Chess Competition looked all prepared to take on their opponents here on Friday.
The venue, Vivekananda Residential School (VRS), saw students in large numbers arriving in the morning with their parents and teachers to take part in the competitions organised under the aegis of Karimnagar District Chess Association.

Mayor S. Ravinder Singh, himself a sportsperson, attended the event as a chief guest, and distributed prizes to winners. Speaking on the occasion, he said playing chess would improve students’ thinking ability and concentration level which would aid them in their studies too.
After Hyderabad, Karimnagar saw the highest number of participants with a total of 260 students testing their skills in the competitions.
The event was sponsored by Thyrocare with knowledge partner being Arrow Publications while cash prizes of ₹15,000 were sponsored by Syndicate Bank.
All those who took part in the competition received participation certificates while lunch was organised for both the students and their parents.
Earlier, the competitions were inaugurated by VRS principal Lalitha Kumari, The Hindu senior manager (circulation) K.V. Ravi Kumar, manager (circulation) M. Ravi Shankar and others.
The winners of the competitions include Vanga Shashank Reddy, Thatipelli Vishal and Ashish Kanth T in under-9 category. In under-11 category – Karthik A, Sanvee R and Sai Vivek D emerged winners. In under-13 category – Allenki Revanth, Vivek B and Sathwika Chinthala and in under-15 category – Shiva Prasad A, Sushma Reddy B and Madhiram Abhiram emerged winners.
