The Cyberabad police on Friday registered a criminal case against the authorities of Housing Board after an Intermediate student drowned in a trench which they had dug up for construction at KPHB colony IV Phase.

Seventeen-year-old M. Krishna Teja went towards 55-foot-deep trench to retrieve a cricket ball. The trench was filled with water.

“The teenager slipped into the trench while collecting the ball and drowned,’’ KPHB Inspector Ch. Kushalkar said. Residents of the colony charged that negligence of the authorities had resulted in the boy’s death. They alleged that officials hadfailed to take precautions like erecting a wall around the trench and sign boards.

Based on their complaint, a case under Section 304-A (rash and negligent act resulting in death) of the Indian Penal Code was registered, the Inspector said.
