TDP-BJP alliance bites the dust

February 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:56 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The results of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have come as a major dampener for the Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party alliance.

The alliance, which betted big on the settlers’ vote, finds itself in a piquant situation as it confined to single digit in the 150 division corporation. Winning over a dozen Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats in the previous general elections, the alliance was confident of at least putting up a decent fight in the corporation polls.

Campaign by senior leaders, including TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, did not yield any results as the electors preferred the TRS to the TDP-BJP alliance. The spectacular victory of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti from the constituencies which are traditionally considered strongholds of the TDP-BJP combine has apparently posed several searching questions over the existence of the support base the two parties hitherto enjoyed in the GHMC jurisdiction.

While the TRS nominees romped home with comfortable majorities in the constituencies held by the BJP within the city, their march was equally impressive in the constituencies like L.B. Nagar, Kukatpally and other areas known for housing significant chunk of those settled from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. The huge margin of victories scored by the TRS candidates in these areas has obviously become a cause of concern for the alliance.

Leaders of the two parties remained tight lipped on the drubbing the two parties received in spite of the high decibel campaign extensively covering all the divisions.
