Survey goes haywire on 2nd day

August 20, 2014 10:42 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 05:42 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The well laid out strategies of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for intensive household survey on Tuesday appears to have gone awry with enumerators failing to cover the jurisdiction in a single day. Even according to official estimates, nearly 1.50 lakh households were left untouched during the survey.

Though it was designed to start on Tuesday morning and completed by late hours itself, enumerators were found engaged in the survey on Wednesday too and collecting forms at different places. In places such as BHEL, Red Hills and other areas where the households were not covered, survey teams landed on Wednesday and hurried through the data collection.

Scores of households that were not visited till late evening on Tuesday were left in utter confusion with no clarity on what would be their status. Though it was expected that a fresh date for the mopping up exercise would be announced, several were taken by surprise with the arrival of enumerators on Wednesday.

The GHMC Commissioner, Somesh Kumar, in a press release said that the leftover cases would be taken up shortly after the dates were decided by the government and the process would be notified. The grievances and complaints reported by households were attended, he said.

According to him, as per the 2011 census, the GHMC had 15,24,392 households against which 20,11,293 were covered during the survey on Tuesday. “It is now estimated by the various circles that 1,49,308 households are leftover for survey,” he said. During the survey, 7,557 households refused to participate while 60,660 were recorded as door locked.

The process of survey too had its own share of problems for enumerators with reports of several of them not getting paid the promised honorarium. Initially, they were assured of Rs.200 but several were handed over Rs.150 and there were complaints of many not even provided with food during the survey.
