Striking Uppal stadium staff may relent

The striking staff of the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Uppal, venue of the inaugural ceremony and the first match of the high-profile IPL on April 5, seem to be relenting by throwing enough hints that they would be happy if in the first instalment two months’ salary is paid.

The staff had not been paid monthly salary since January and they even seem agreeable to payment of the remaining amount in the next phase to clear all the incentives due to them. “Yes, to express our sincerity we will start watering the playing area from tomorrow evening and then review appropriately what should be done if the HCA bosses take a step backwards,” a senior member representing the striking employees informed The Hindu .

“Our intention is never to see the IPL matches moved out of Hyderabad. We are only fighting for our legitimate demands.

This time around we don’t want mere assurances but some concrete measures like actual payments,” he remarked.

“When all sorts of payments are made in the last few months, why only staff salaries and incentives were not cleared,” he questioned.

Meanwhile, HCA Secretary K. John Manoj, desperate to see that “the prestige of the association doesn’t take a beating and also conveying that the pride and prestige of the Telangana State itself is at stake” held a series of talks with the striking staff on Thursday and assured them of sorting out every issue raised by them.
