The serene environs of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) at Gachibowli were turned into a hunting ground by two youngsters who allegedly ensnared a spotted deer and killed it. The anti-poaching squad of the Forest Department officials picked up the duo and are investigating the case.
According to the squad officials, the male spotted deer was allegedly snared by Ashok (26) and K. Naresh (20), whose parents are employed with the university, on Sunday.
After collecting the trapped animal, a species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, they killed it and split the meat to consume some and sell the rest to others.
Duo to be booked
“A portion of the meat was sold to people in the surrounding areas,” said the Forest Range Officer, V.Tirumala Rao. Part of the hide and some meat that the accused had kept in a refrigerator was also recovered by the squad.
The sprawling university campus with lots of green cover has a presence of wild life.
“Our squad acted on information and picked up these youngsters.
A case will be booked against them under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972,” said Assistant Conservator of Forests, Anti-Poaching Squad, M.Raja Ramana Reddy. The arrested persons face the possibility of a three year jail term and a fine of Rs 25,000.
