Special sitting of Telangana Legislature today

Amendments to the Land Acquisition Act to be taken up during the session

April 29, 2017 11:50 pm | Updated 11:51 pm IST - HYDERABAD

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Saturday decided to have only one-day sitting as part of the special session on Sunday to further amend the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013.

The Legislature was not prorogued either after the budget session that ended on March 27 and after the special session held for a day on April 16 to pass the bills on increase in reservation to STs and Minorities, on GST and on Heritage Policy.

Official sources stated that Leader of the Opposition Mr. Jana Reddy proposed that the issue of chilli farmers be taken up for debate, even if it became necessary to extend the session by a day or two. However, Leader of the House K. Chandrasekhar Rao was said to have turned down the proposal asserting that no other issue could be taken up during special session except the amendments to the Land Acquisition Act.

Mr. Jana Reddy too understood to have made it clear that they (Congress) would support the amendments only if the amendments had better proposals than the 2013 Act. The Chief Minister was learnt to have replied that the amendments would be much better than the 2013 Act. Officials stated that the Assembly session would commence at 11 am and that of the Council at 3 pm.

Meanwhile, Floor Leader of BJP in the Assembly G. Kishan Reddy criticised the government for not inviting the leaders of TDP and BJP to BAC meeting and said holding session without two opposition parties was unconstitutional.
