They thought, — and many made them believe, — that getting back their properties “illegally occupied by suspended policeman Mohan Reddy” was impossible. Thanks to the methodical and sustained efforts of officials of the Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), they are emerging owners of the properties occupied by the controversial policeman and his ‘benamis’.
Already four persons, in whose names the assets got registered allegedly by the ‘well-connected’ policeman, cancelled the registrations. Many more are in the pipeline.
Dasari Nagendram, a farmer, took loan of ₹3 lakh from Mohan Reddy in 2008. In the next seven years, the ryot paid him nearly ₹ 11.20 lakh towards the principal and interest. “At the time of taking the loan itself, Reddy got my open plot on Karimnagar outskirts registered in the name of his relative P. Sridhar Reddy,” he recalled.
When Nagendram approached the suspended ASI, seeking release of his property in 2015, the latter allegedly maintained he had no connection with the deal since the property was already transferred to the name of Sridhar Reddy. Even as the dispute was on, he was arrested in school correspondent Prasada Rao’s suicide case. “I had nowhere to go. Since the plot was transferred to Mohan Reddy’s benami Sridhar Reddy through a sale-deed, everyone said no force in world can help me get back my plot,” Nagendram said. While the Karimnagar police and the CID officials could not come to his rescue, the ACB authorities, who arrested the tainted cop this April, made the difference.
“When we recorded Sridhar Reddy’s statement, he categorically stated that he never bought the plot from Nagendram and did it at the behest of the arrested policeman,” ACB Karimnagar Additional SP Sudarshan Goud told The Hindu . Eventually, Sridhar Reddy cancelled the sale-deed of the open plot by approaching the Sub-Registrar.
As ACB officials dug deeper, three more persons came forward and got the sale-deeds of properties cancelled. This included an advocate from Karimnagar K. Jaganmohan Reddy, Pulgam Mallesham and S. Jitehnder Reddy. These properties were originally owned by victims of Mohan Reddy.
